Grafenwiesen is a small spa and holiday town. It is a state-recognized resort located in the Bavarian Forest region of southeastern Germany, close to the Czech border. The town belongs to the Cham district in the Upper Palatinate region and has approximately 1,500 inhabitants.
It is known for not being overcrowded with tourists, which has allowed it to preserve the traditional atmosphere of a charming Bavarian village. Just above Grafenwiesen begins the largest continuous forest area in Central Europe, stretching all the way to Lipno Reservoir in the Czech Republic.
The first written mention of the settlement dates back to 1177. During the Middle Ages, it was home to the ministerials of the Counts of Bogen and the Margraves of Cham.
